| Economic history of the area, priorities for economic, social and cultural development | Historically, much of Molise is identified with the ancient history of Sannio characterized by sheep tracks and the transhumance. Transhumance is one of the oldest traditions Molise: is the movement of herds from mountains to the coast. This custom is repeated at the beginning of the summer, when the pastures are transported to the coast in search of the coolest places in which to let their herds graze cattle. Molise is one of the few Italian regions where transhumance is still being carried out. The integrity of Molise was kept until 1221, when the county was Frederick II of Swabia. In that year the Molise became the site of an executioner, that is, a district of imperial justice, where the king's authority was superimposed to that of feudal lords. From the Spanish domination (1531), there was the period of isolation and severe economic and social crisis, given the presence in the territory of several bands of brigands. In 1806, Napoleon, Molise became for the first time an autonomous province. Since the time of the Kingdom of Naples, the territory of Molise was actually included in three different executioners: The Peasantry of Molise, Abruzzo and Hither captains. With the Unification of Italy, many rebellions that broke out in the region were completely sedated until the end of the nineteenth century. In 1963 the Province of Campobasso region was proclaimed on its own. The industry only started in the seventies of the twentieth century, has its relative strengths of the Fiat car plant in Termoli, created thanks to the state, the rest is represented by small industries, some of which related to the local craft traditions . The traditional activities (agriculture and pastoralism) is still absorb 18% of the workforce, more than double the national average. In recent times have been partly replaced by service industries, though generally not very profitable (dominant lead the government, tied to the institution before the region of Molise and later, in 1971, the province of Isernia), supported by the State. Tourism is also underdeveloped. In 2004 the GDP of the region was of 5.525 billion euro; the average annual income per capita was of € 13,963. Today the building industry and crafts (which produce for local consumption) take precedence over manufacturing (predominantly those foods, with pasta and olive oil mills, the textile and clothing, and furniture). |
